A2 Media Studies Advanced Production

Example 1

Name of my artist and track:

Name: Jamie T
Track: Sticks “N” Stones

What is the star image of the artist:

Jamie T is signed to Virgin Records which is a successful and huge music company expanding throughout Europe and America. His genre of music includes; Indie Rock, UK Garage and Post-Punk Revival. With this in mind It means that he has a wider audience which he can attract. His new sounds incorporate faster rhythms, a punk aesthetic and more abrasive sound than previous material which encourages a wider and more varied audience and type of music. His star image is made up of a range of meanings which attract his target audiences which includes his: Youthfulness, originality, creativity and talent. He is shown to be “one of us” which makes the audience at ease and make them feel like your can relate to him. He's dressed always very casually with no designer labels to show he isn't trying to “buy” our attention through his looks but through his talent and creativity which he brings to the stage. Ideologies shape the way in which the artists images and careers are developed and the way that they are marketed towards their specific audiences. The Organic Ideology of Creativity portrays a “naturalistic” approach to Jamie T, which means success is within the artist and their image is not “enhanced” by the record company. The artist is given time to evolve and progress through their career. These artists including Jamie T show raw talent and creativity within them and no one else. These artists are often aimed at older more sophisticated consumers. Jamie T in interviews, magazines and videos has always shown a fun, talented, down to earth, unique, casual, creative artist which wasn't mouldered by the record company like many other artists have. They often use a hand held camera when shooting Jamie T's music videos similarly to a video recorder. As his talent over runs his looks and image a high budget video is not necessary and shows his unique talent.

Treatment for the music video:

The whole video is all on hand held sometimes more movement then others, different shades of colours to reveal time and age, also at some times a video recorder sign occurs.
Song begins and we see artist at his job looking very bored varying from extreme close ups and wide shots to set the scene. Fast shots of the local town, very busy done by hand held camera, the bus stop and train station also included.
1st verse – Filming inside of a train through the windows out to the artist who is running along beside the train as it moves singing along but after a while gives up and stops, here we have extreme close ups to earphone in his ear, his face and eyes. Flash backs when he was younger of him on a road corner/park with friends drinking and smoking underage – filming as if it was someones video recorder back then, jerky quick pace movements showing the energy of his youth. Play fighting and throwing beer cans over the park. Flash to colour to his garden everyone grown up more sophisticated but still having fun. Close ups of his face, the drink, smoking, ash tray, the sun and his friends.

Chorus – Him and his friends on their bikes and skateboards going down alley ways and roads in a big group singing to the camera. Group shots and shots of the artist. Passing walls with graffiti on, a working class area, bit dirty and old. Extreme close ups, them causing a bit of trouble, doing jumps, swerving around corners not letting traffic past but all light hearted and non violent actions. Him back at his house in the kitchen getting a drink singing along to the song close to the camera, friends passing him having a laugh showing hes social, laid back and having fun. Back to the train scene where hes listening to his music close up on his face. Back to them in an alley way some off their bikes now singing to the camera, hand movements, funny faces, tripping each other up having a laugh. Back to him at his in the garden having a water fight, quick changes in camera angles and movements but mostly on the artist. Back to them getting on their bikes and skateboards getting away quick as if they had causes a bit of a riot.

2nd verse – Shot of him and a friend at a pub getting a pint sitting down. Close up of the pint then his cigarette then him stumping it out. Close up of the smoke as it goes away and him laughing. Flash to him standing at “Hampton Wick” as the train passes and him getting angry at him self. Shot from the other side of the platform and see youths throwing things at him from the other side. Shot of him in front of the skate park whilst at the back tricks are going on. Him singing to the camera people joining in. Close ups on him and his mouth and the skateboarding. Back to him at the train station running away from the youths. Then back to the garden party where they're still having the water fight. Flash to him running down an alley with his friends, walls covered in graffiti by a train track. Back to the skate park everyone joining in, him trying to skateboard but failing miserably, everyone laughing and joking away. End line him putting his “two fingers up.”
Chorus – Him and his friends running down the road finding people in an empty estate with big building around him. Him singing, them dancing having fun. Close ups of his face and mouth, long shot and establishing shot to show the area. Lots of canted angles and movement to show the lively hood of him and his friends. Back to him in the garden just lazing about with friends who are beginning to leave, saying their goodbyes. Flash to him dancing down an alley way by himself then seeing a gang of youths coming after him so he sprints of and jumps over the fence. Back to them at the estate chucking their beers everywhere including into the camera and on the floor. Flash back to him running to the train station for another train. Close up on his feet, earphone and mouth.

3rd verse – Filmed inside a train varied shots of the train moving fast along shooting houses, parks, car parks and the stations. Filming inside his “momma's” flat where him and a friend are dancing around crashing into everything and braking things by accident. Dancing towards the cameras, nose and mouth up again the camera, doing the moon walk and sitting down staring. Back to him at garden when everyone's gone seeing its such a mess but him doing nothing but singing to the camera as it tracks around him at a canted angle. Shoot back to the estate where they are all dancing around and him in the middle singing to the camera. Shots in the train of the houses quickly passing. Then them again in “momma's” flat trying to tidy up but not getting very far. Quick, fast pace shots close ups zoom ins as if they're filming with a video recorder. Back to the alley where they are following the camera.
Chorus – Carrying on from that shot they begin to run following the camera and the pace quickens. At this point it begins to get darker. Flash to him when he was younger getting chased down an alley way then to him still younger in black and white at a park bench drinking and smoking. Shot of him at the estate turned night too, a lot of smoke and gas them throwing lights and firework sort of things. Close up low angles of him to the side and from the bottom, his friends jumping on him joining him. Back to the garden of him singing again low angle. Then to the skate park where its darker and everyone's rapping up and he still attempts to get on the skateboard but falls off. Back to him in the alley singing to the camera then back to the estate where the camera follows him around his friends.

4th verse – The pace calms down. Shooting in the dark at the estate with broken windows around them and them throwing mini flame lights. Less fast pace shots, more wide shots and medium close ups on him singing. Shot through a broken window onto his face then back to his face without broken glass. Friends calming down supporting what hes saying. By the middle the pace creeps up and there are more quick shots of him through the smoke, light, windows varying from close ups to extreme close ups to low angle and wide shots. Still them at the estate but when it was light them picking each other up and throwing them off, people trying to do the moon walk and handstands. Him up against the camera pressing his face against it singing.

Chorus – Alley way him and friends running again towards the camera low angle long shot quickly to a medium shot. Back to him in the garden with all his friends dancing and having a laugh. Shot back to the estate in the light where they're joking around then to the “mommas” house of him and his friend laughing on the floor medium close ups then a wide shot showing the mess they've caused in the house. Wide shot of them at the estate in the dark them still throwing things in the air, lots of smoke, drinking beer and dancing. Him in the garden drinking beer by himself then flashing back to his youth. Shot of him at the skateboarding park as it gets dark and them running out down the alleys. Back to them in the estate in the night very wild, lots of movement and dancing. Lots of quick and fast paced shots of the artists mouth and face from different angles and positions then his friends join in, quick shots of them throwing things. Mostly all done at a low angle but still by hand held. At the end it will be a shot of him and his friend in the alley way. During the video they have been following the camera but suddenly they turn around and the camera follows them. The artist carries on singing until the very end when they sprint off into the distance.

Alternative shots: The band including the guitarist and drummer including him singing. Possibly shot in a room, outside or in a random area. This can be instead of being in “Mommas” house or some other shots.

Name of my band and track:

Name: The Smiths
Track: The Charming Man

The star image or the band:

The group had a very unique and distinctive visual style on single and album covers which often often features colorful images of pop stars and film. Their single covers very rarely had any text on other than the band name and often didn't appear on the outer cover of their UK releases. The images that were shown on the covers indicated some of their personal interests in strange and cult stars or images of unknown models taken from old magazines or films. The Smiths dressed no different to their fans usually wearing jeans and plain t-shirts which reflected the “back to basics” guitar-and-drums style of the music. This contrasted with all the exotic high-fashion artists and bands out at that time including Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet. This showed that they were truly about their talent and music and their image was not their top priority like others bands at this time. The Organic Ideology of Creativity portrays a “naturalistic” approach to The Smiths unlike Duran Duran who can portray the synthetic ideology of creativity. They are presented as casual, talented and basic people who can relate to everyone. They don't like to think of themselves as “big famous stars” but as talented people who are out to entertain and bring people happiness through their music. They were signed to Rough Trade and displayed a cross between indie pop and alternative pop music.

Treatment for the music video:

This song and video is about a guy who see's this charming man who helps him out due to a puncture in his tire of his bicycle. The charming man drives him back to his flat but during this journey you see them getting along very well and the singer growing fond of the charming man. We see the contrast between the singer and the stylish charming man and him realizing he likes the charming man but is on a completely different level to him. We see the singer passing him by and seeing the charming man at the pub looking very stylish having a laugh and being very sociable where as he is wearing dirty old clothes with no friends and by himself. We also shoot the band which we cut back to ever so often in the video. By the end hes having fun with the band as they play but ends with him walking then running then walking again down a dark street then him standing still which is shot with either a wide or close up shot.

We begin filming the guitar doing the riff at the beginning of the song. We will be using close ups on the strings and fingers then zoom out to a wider shot of the bang in a darkened out room. There will be a singer, drummer, bass guitar and guitar. When the drums then being there will be a close up of the drum kit, him hitting the drums and the symbols. We will move around all the instruments and low angle shots of the singer. The singer doesn't sing yet but will be there by the microphone moving around.
1st Verse – As he begins to sing we will go to the hillside scene where we will see a guy cycling through the hillside. We will have an establishing shot to set the scene then straight into low angle shots of him cycling pass the camera and to the camera. Then he manages to get a puncture. We will shoot him trying to fix the puncture through the tires and he shows to look bothered and unable to fix it. As he stands up gradually a stylish car passes by with a “charming man” inside. We shoot the man also from a low angle shot but also showing the car which shows hes slight wealthier than the singer who's on his bike. He invites him into the car but the singer is reluctant carries on fixing the bike again shot through the tires. He finally gives up and gets into the car. We will film the singer struggling to get the bike to the car, into the boot where there will be a close up of the boot shutting and then into the passenger seat where we will shot the stylish leather interior then the front door closing. The camera will watch the car drive off then switch to them in the car who are laughing, flirting and having fun. There will be more of a lower angle of the charming man than the singer as the singer believes he is a “pantry boy” which is an insult against a working class person. The camera will switch from each of them and will be shot in a old styled video way.

“A jumped up pantry boy” - This is when we see the singer getting out of the stylish car which is a contrast to where he lives which is in an estate. He gets his bicycle and struggles to push it up to his flat door. Whilst he does this he sings into the camera. There will be also side shots of him to show hes by himself and feeling lonely. We ill then flash back to the band singing then back to the flat then back to the band again for the next verse.

2nd verse – We remain with the band at this point who are dressed very casually in jeans and a plain t-shirt or shirt. There will be several close ups on the singers mouth and the band to establish the bands star image. We will then flash to him walking down a very nice area of London where he see's this charming man in a pub. We will shoot him of more of a high angle then to the charming man of a low angle to show the different status but also the singers love for the charming man. He stops to watch the charming man and looks at his outfit and then at the charming man which the camera follows “through his eyes” then walks off as the camera stays to watch him walk off in the distance. We will then go to him walking down the round singing slightly slow motion, then back to the band then back to him walking down the road which becomes a run as the camera follows. It then jumps back to the flash of the charming man at the pub then to the pub then back to him running down the road. For the end instrument bit its him with the band as they play and him dancing round, then back to him running down the road which becomes a walk now then a shot of the charming man then to him then back to the charming man then him standing still staring at the camera either wide shot of close up shot of his face in the dark with little light around him.

Name of my band and track:

Name: David Guetta ft. Akon
Track: Sexy Chick

What is the star image of the band:

Aliaune Badara Akon Thiam better known by his middle and stage name Akon is a Senegalese-American R&B singer-songwriter, record producer, businessman, and philanthropist. He devotes his time to entertaining crowds and fans as well as being a serious businessman who has built up a huge empire which includes a record label, fashion line and charity foundation. When he broke through as a singer/rapper in 2004 he portrayed a thuggish and gangster look wearing baggy trousers, big t shirts, lots of “bling” and hoodies. He also sang a lot about the crime and thuggish atmospheres he's been in. He attracted young men and boys of many cultures. Through out the years he has become more sophisticated wearing smart suits, designer clothing and not portraying a “bad boy” image anymore. This had a good effect on the fans as his image a few years ago reflected badly on some people and established gangs and rivals but now he shows a more sophisticated and mature look and image this can be seen through his fan base. He now has a very clean cut look unlike before. He's even brought out a fashion line which also reflects his new sleek look which he hopes people will follow.
David Guetta is a french DJ. His vocals for his songs include Akon, Will.i.am, Kelly Rowland and many more. A lot of his songs have topped the charts and are known by many people. As a DJ he dresses well and casually often wearing designer sun glasses and respectable clothing which includes a shirt or t-shirt and smart trousers. He always managed to put an item of clothing which is very alternative or bright to reveal his energy and creativity which is also reflected in his performance and songs. He is 41 years old so has a more sophisticated look about him but still has a tweak of youthfulness and energy in his style.

Treatment for the music video:

The concept of this video are two groups one female one male who are getting ready then who happen to go to the same club and meet. In the middle there's a dance routine, the artist singing by himself out of the club with some girls, girls dancing with only their silhouettes showing, the crowd in the club by the 2nd verse get glow in the dark paint and paint themselves/out one hand in the paint and have a shot of just pitch black and then just their hands moving as they dance. By the end of the video the two groups meet and have a dance/drink then leave together.

1st Verse - At the beginning of the song its instrumental for a few seconds where we will shoot the main artist by himself starting at the floor tracking upwards to his face using a low angle shot. When the singing begins we will shoot him singing in a darkened room with flashes of lights where you'll see girls free moving in the background but giving no characters away apart from the protagonist. There will be close ups of his sunglasses, his clean cut style and his jewelry. We will then move onto the two groups, the male and the female. We will shoot them both getting ready having close ups on the girls doing their make up, dancing around their room having fun and the males getting ready, drinking and dancing also. The end of this scene will be the two groups leaving to go the same club, the last shot will be the doors closing of the flat/house.

1st Chorus – At this point we will see the two groups enter the club. There will be a wide shot of the club and how busy it is. Tracking up from the girls shoes to their faces then to the males walking in to the crowded club where everyone's dancing to the song. The boys walk over to the bar and check out the club/girls, whilst the girls go straight for the dance floor and start dancing and having a laugh. At this point the camera pace and movement is fast to demonstrate the energy of the place and them and their youthfulness. The boys then get their drink and move over to sit down in a stylish and luxury corner of the club and look out to the dance floor

2nd Chorus – Here the main 5/6 girls will perform a dance routine in the club. The two groups finally make eye contact and there's a lot of close ups on their faces. Whilst they dance there are lots of quick shots low angle and high angle and shots of the crowd enjoying their dance. There will be also flashes of girls dancing in a darkened room like the scene where the artist is singing but separate shots of them free moving against a lit up wall or flashes of light onto them, however we will again only see the silhouettes and not give too much away.

2nd Verse – We then go back to the club where the two groups have made close eye contact and the boys get ready to move on to the dance floor. There will also at this point be flashes of the DJ in the club pumping up the crowd and also flashes of the artist singing with the girls dancing behind him. During this verse we also have seperate shots of the girls dancing but in a crowded area then flashing back to the boys about to walk up to them.

1st Chorus – At this point we will see the boys move onto the dance floor and as this is done the crowd will move away as the camera tracks back as they follow it. A wide shot will establish them and the boys and also the girls. Also many close ups of the “couples” that are about to emerge e.g close up of male A then close up of female A's eyes etc. As they move towards each other tubs of paint are given and they open it and find its glow in the dark paint. In time for the 2nd chorus everyone in the club has done something imaginative with the paint or everyone does the same thing by putting just their hand in the paint and raising that hand on the 2nd chorus whilst dancing.

2nd Chorus – Here we will see the two groups now together dancing with each other. We will get separate shots of each of the couples having a laugh and dancing away. During this chorus we will have flash backs to the dance routine and the girls dancing against a lit/dark background as well as the artist singing. During the time hes in the club he doesn't sing but may change when filming. There will be also flashes of the DJ and an over the shoulder shot of the DJ onto the crowd where you can see everyone dancing with one wist in the air which is luminous.

After this chorus there's just instrumental where we will see the male and females dancing together, the DJ, close ups of drinks the paint, a wide shot of the club, tracking shot of everyone dancing and giving the audience an over all feel of the how much fun everyone is having. There will also be flashes of the artist by himself not singing just nodding his head slightly and then the girls separately dancing. By the end of the song we see the two groups walk out together and then the screen closes in on us not to reveal too much.
